Merrimac, into an iron-sided vessel rechristened the C. President Lincoln did not believe that secession was constitutionally legitimate; his view was that in a democracy a minority had an obligation to accept the decision of a majority, or else elections had no real meaning. This conflict over the extension of slavery exploded into a prologue to the Civil War in 1856 in the internecine conflict known as �Bleeding Kansas,� in which people from Northern and Southern states moved en masse to the by-then-approaching-statehood Kansas Territory to influence whether the new state would be slave or free (the issue was left to �popular sovereignty,� meaning the state�s residents would vote on it when they voted on the state�s constitution).

On Sept. 13, 1858, runaway slave John Price, who had escaped (like Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Eliza") over the frozen Ohio River, was betrayed, for $20, by 14-year-old Shakespeare Boynton, the son of a local Democrat. In the first volume (1860-1863), Merklee lived in the city of Philadelphia and was very active in the 10th Street Baptist Church. Rather than accept Republican rule, Southern radicals immediately provoked a crisis by organizing a campaign for secession. Although the movement to introduce slavery into Illinois was unsuccessful, the cultural origins of Illinoisans continued to condition their attitudes on questions of race.

Davis oversaw the creation of large military departments. Many of the senior leaders of the army were out of commission: A. Lee's army suffered 28,000 casualties (versus Meade's 23,000). Share prices fell on the New York Stock Exchange when investors began to buy gold, and its value increased 10%. The letters, many only dated with the year, describe daily life in Hackettstown and include such highlights as having “a likeness” taken and embarking on railroad trips. Lee from the collection of the Museum of the Confederacy consisting of military dispatches, telegrams, and special orders written by or on the behalf of General Lee. From these black Americans, Pinkerton recruited a small number for intelligence collection missions behind Confederate lines. The new world has never achieved a greater triumph than by this demonstration that, given its political and social organization, ordinary people of good will can accomplish feats which only heroes could accomplish in the old world!9 As the war and revolution were drastically changing class relations in the United States, the war also had a major impact in the class war between the capitalists and the working class in Britain.
