On January 21, 1980, Western Pacific and Union Pacific announced that Union Pacific would be pursuing a purchase of the Western Pacific which WP President Robert Flannery blamed on “galloping fuel price increases, jumps in the cost of materials, contract wage costs, and increases in interest rates.” In December 1982, the Interstate Commerce Commission approved the sale, (which also included UP’s purchase of the Missouri Pacific). Samuel's original equipment, which was used in the Boring branch salvage project, including Engine 5100, Engine 45 and a boom crane are still lettered for Samuel Pacific Industries to this day.

By 1923 the ARR track had reached the town of Nenana on the Tanana River. En route he planned to visit a friend at Fort Garry, now Winnipeg, Manitoba. With the Atlantic cable and the transcontinentals, Margaret Irvein Carrington wrote in 1869 “with only a single wire to underlie the Pacific, the whole earth will become as a whispering gallery, wherein all nations, by one electric pulsation, may throb in unison, and the continent shall tremble with the rumbling of wheels that swiftly and without interruption or delay transport its gospel and commerce.” By 1869, the Pacific Coast was only four days from Omaha, and Carrington reported that “an officer of the army recently returned in forty hours over a distance which required a march of sixty-four days in 1866.” It was only after the Civil War that the railroads really began to create technologically coherent systems.

The Union Pacific engine, the, 'Jupiter,' was driven by my good friend, George Lashus, who still lives in Ogden. The property covered by the mortgage was the line from Brooklyn to Patchogue, and the branch from Fresh Pond to the junction with the New York & Flushing Railroad. Also on the KPRY roster is a 1948 GE diesel-electric engine similar to the early GE units purchased by Lihue Plantation Co. The railroad went into receivership in 1858 and was renamed the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railroad in 1859.
