Such a topic is more appropriate to an analysis of the role of institutions in rural development. Another topic is the development of the industry itself. While my results show that the industry has been beneficial for women and that it is a catalyst for social change, undeniably not every effect of the industry is positive. Negative impacts include the resulting environmental degradation, which, although generally outside of the focus of this research, needs to be briefly addressed regarding two main issues: water use and the chemical contamination of water and soil.

There are entire families from these two regions working in Muisca Flowers. Clearly, not all individuals benefit from hacienda-like labor relations. In fact, distinctions can be analyzed examining the emic or local categories of social differentiation. Among rural inhabitants and their descendants, who would not characterize themselves as campesinos or peasants unless they are old or live off of subsistence agriculture, but rather think of themselves as workers, social distinctions are drawn between three distinct categories: raizales, antiguos, and migrantes (defined below).

Although contemporary Fagua and Canelón have a diverse pattern of land ownership, social ties between the workers and owners are very similar to those from the early twentieth century. The vision and the specific possibilities, however, have changed in the last twenty years. Previously, people hoped to buy enough land to cultivate and build a house. Today, their hope is to buy a big enough lot on which to place a prefabricated house and not have to pay rent, without the accompanying desire or the possibility to cultivate a subsistence plot.
