To make up for his lack of firsthand knowledge, he relied on news reports. To hold his readers, he added shocking details and tricky plots. He could—and did—turn a simple card game into a life-and-death drama. His stories appeared in weekly magazines called dime novels. At first, Calamity Jane played only a minor role in Wheeler’s stories. The hero’s role went to an outlaw called Deadwood Dick. The public loved the stories and begged for more. Calamity emerged as Dick’s sidekick. One popular title was Deadwood Dick on Deck; or, Calamity Jane, the Heroine of Whoop-Up.
