Consciously Incompetent (CI) The student is aware of his or her need to learn one or more basic gun handling tasks. Consciously Competent (CC) He or she is able to perform basic gun handling tasks when consciously thinking about these tasks. Unconsciously competent (UC) With training, the student is able to perform all the firearm tasks without conscious thought. This is the autopilot concept of gun handling. One thing to remember: we all started out as a UI with our introduction to firearms and shooting.
