Although there was no way of knowing whether the decision to take the tour to out of the way musical backwaters such as Nampa, Idaho, or Moline, Illinois, backfired on the band, or if the Vancouver riot had any significance, certain shows failed to sell out. There were no such problems for the 5 December gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden, however, as the entire ticket allotment went within hours of going on sale. The next stop on the 34-date US tour was to have been Philadelphia’s First Union Centre arena the following evening, but the show was cancelled at the last minute following a telephone call to the 14,000-seat venue at around 11pm informing promoters CCE (Clear Channel Entertainment) that an unspecified band member had suddenly been taken ill.

In fact, Axl wasn’t even in the city at the time he and the rest of the band were due to appear owing to his having delayed his departure from Los Angeles to the actual day of the show. 30pm. The rest of the group had made it to the venue but there seemed little point in going on without the star attraction, so they remained in the adjoining backstage area drinking beer in celebration of guitarist Robin Finck’s birthday. Buckethead later told one bemused reporter that, although he and the rest of the band had been aware Axl’s plane had been delayed and he therefore wouldn’t make the soundcheck, they had been under the impression that Axl would still arrive in time to do the show.
