If you are using a cloth template, you may choose at this point to baste the shapes in place on the fabric. Using the same thread, begin filling the open spaces in the template with a crocheted mesh that joins the shapes to each other; take care to keep the motifs stretched out. When the mesh is complete, remove the pins or basting from the template, and block the finished piece. The Cottage Lamp Shade (page 257) uses this technique. For an even easier Irish crochet lookalike, simply create a mesh fabric in the size and shape of your choice (using any yarn or thread), then sew completed motifs onto the mesh in whatever design you wish.
Most crocheters use a color that matches the outside edge of the motifs wherever possible, but careful use of a contrasting color can be a playful surprise. Pieces are usually sewn from the wrong side, holding the right sides together. But you may want to try sewing pieces together with wrong sides facing, use a contrasting color yarn, or otherwise be creative with your seaming. Whipstitch is the easiest and most common way of sewing pieces together. Holding pieces with right sides together, whipstitch pieces together, working into each stitch.
Connections are sometimes under stress, and the end-of-the-round stitch is often not the strongest area of the motif. If it is necessary to have them near each other, take extra care to weave in the ends securely. SEWING TOGETHER Sewing motifs together with a tapestry needle is a tried-and-true method of joining motifs. It provides an attractive, flat, strong seam, but it can be quite time-consuming. It is most often done on pieces with adjoining straight edges, with the seam stitches worked into every crochet stitch along the edges.
