Titanium has a great affinity for interstitial elements, such as oxygen and nitrogen, and readily absorbs them at elevated temperatures, which increases strength and reduces ductility (Fig. 5). Oxygen tends to increase the strength and decrease the ductility. As the amount of oxygen and nitrogen increases, the yield and ultimate strengths increase and the ductility and fracture toughness decrease.
