Before we do that, we need to define some key concepts. Religious Groups We use the term “religious groups” to refer to all of the faiths, churches, denominations, sects, and cults that are part of America’s religious land- 28 Chapter 2 scape. We chose this term, rather than the more common term “denomination,” to be theologically neutral and inclusive. It encompasses Protestantism, Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), the Universal Life Church (aka Moonies), and many other faith groups.

It assumes that religious groups—like the others—are important in their own right (not merely by-products of other social forces). It also borrows conflict theory’s idea that all groups act on their self-interests, but it adds the notion that they also act in terms of their values (which may or may not coincide with their interests). Thus, it invites us to think about how groups and their members try to maximize their access to resources, and how they might encounter resistance from members who question the legitimacy of pursuing this goal.

However, when religious attachment is accompanied by feelings of superiority and inferiority, religious prejudice does tend to occur (Glock and Stark 1966; Hunsberger and Jackson 2005). When religious affiliation involves loyalty to one group and antipathy toward others, religion serves as a potential battle line along which people divide (Coleman 1956). Religious prejudice by itself need not lead to religious stratification. The presence of competition structured along religious lines is an additional factor required for the emergence of stratification.
