Marx devoted his life to documenting and understanding the causes and consequences of this fundamental and unequal divide. Marx expressed profound moral outrage over the plight of the proletariat, who, at the time of his writings, were unable to afford the products of their labor and suffered from deplorable living conditions.

Durkheim identified four types of social ties, each of which describes a different kind of problematic relationship to others and society: egoistic, altruistic, anomic, and fatalistic. Egoistic describes a state in which the ties attaching the individual to others and to the society are weak. When individuals are detached from others, they encounter less resistance to suicide. The lives of the chronically ill, for example, are often characterized by isolation from others if friends, family, and other acquaintances avoid interacting with the ill person out of fear of upsetting the patient or themselves.
