We would not have been able to do that without Lean. Our quality has improved, on time delivery improved, working capital improved and most importantly it is sticking! The Lean/Six Sigma tools can be learned and can be mastered; but, without the right leadership, culture and perseverance, Lean will not stick. So get ready for the journey that will provide many twists and turns. It is not for the faint of heart or easily discouraged. But Lean done right, within an organization which values its employees can bring lasting benefits.

Cultural change is very hard work and cannot be done in a 3 day Kaizen event which is why I believe it is often abandoned. The cultural change aspect of Lean is the hardest part of the journey. The leader must not only drive this from the top but must have a leadership team which believes in it as well. If a link in the chain is broken, Lean will not stick! That is where true leadership comes in and sometimes leaders must be replaced if they are not on board. It is important everyone in the organization know what they are accountable for, have the necessary skills and training to meet these goals, and is held accountable.

Lean can absolutely be a game changer for organizations if done right. What I have found during this time is that making it stick is one of the most challenging aspects of the journey. Prior to meeting Charlie Protzman I thought we were doing pretty well with Lean. I was running a very successful manufacturing facility. We had gone through several phases of Lean which improved productivity, profitability and we had decent on time deliveries to our customers. What we were lacking was the practical side of Lean.
