To address this problem, Bob’s teachers would select a student to sit in an adjoining row and become his designated “helpmate”—a creative strategy, given that this was in the 1930s. Sitting in front of class with Bob, this student would write short notes or silently mouth whatever information was deemed important: a change of page in the text or subject lesson; what to copy from any special notes they wrote for themselves; important announcements by the teacher; and, of course, homework assignments.
