They swept Winnipeg and beat Calgary in seven games. After sweeping Minnesota four games to none in the semis, the Oilers were set for the finals against the Islanders. 53 A Moment to Savor The Islanders were ready to play, but it was easy to notice something different about the Oilers this year. They were no longer an inexperienced bunch of kids. They were in their prime and led by the best hockey player in the world. In their first game, Edmonton won, 1–0. The Oilers lost 6–1 the following night, but came back with authority to win the next three games in front of Edmonton fans.

That honor went to Mario Lemieux, who scored a total of 11 goals. Nine of these goals had been set up by his friend and teammate, number 99. Wayne was ecstatic for Mario, who was a rising star himself. In 1988, the Oilers returned to claim the Stanley Cup again. The 1988 Cup was the Oilers’ fourth in five years.
